Texas State Capital Building |

The challenges presented by this once in a lifetime project were a unique opportunity for Berger to showcase our "can do" attitude by working very closely with all three general contractors, the two architects, and the State Preservation Board. Custom castings of bronze, iron, and aluminum are incorporated with our architectural metal throughout this massive project. |

One particularly interesting item is the restoration of the twenty column capitals which surround the Capitol dome. Every capital was taken apart piece by piece with each one consisting of 86 different pieces (acanthus leaves, rosette flowers, and circular swirls called volutes). Once taken down, cataloged, and cleaned, the piece were either repaired or replicated according to the degree of wear and tear. Each column top is made in two pieces, each with 43 parts. The parts are attached to a rounded backing made of stainless steel. The stainless steel pieces are then bolted atop the columns, one on each side, to form a complete capital. When they are in place, they appear to be in one place.
